Family:  Cichlidae (Cichlids), subfamily: Pseudocrenilabrinae
Max. size:  30 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  Africa: Lake Malawi and upper Shire River.
Diagnosis:  Diagnosis: dark oblique band on the lachrymal bone in front of the eye; teeth in outer row well-spaced (Ref. 55954).
Biology:  Occurs mainly over sandy and muddy substrates and feeds on fish (Ref. 5595).
IUCN Red List Status: Endangered (EN); Date assessed: 22 May 2018 (A2ad) Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
