Family:  Haemulidae (Grunts), subfamily: Haemulinae
Max. size:  13 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 3 - 90 m, oceanodromous
Distribution:  Western Atlantic: southern Florida, USA and Bahamas to northern South America.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 10-11; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 2-2; Anal soft rays: 10-10. Dorsal fins widely separated.
Biology:  Found in oceanic waters (Ref. 9626), sometimes over coral heads (Ref. 9710). Swims in schools to depths of 64 m (Ref. 26938). Feeds on zooplankton and small fishes.
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 20 August 2012 Ref. (130435)
