Etymology: Pseudomystus: Greek, pseudes = false + Greek, mystax = whiskered, used by Belon in 1553 to describe all fishes with whiskers (Ref. 45335); sobrinus: Name from the Latin 'sobrinus' meaning a cousin on the mother's side, referring to its resemblance to Pseudomystus siamensis; used as noun.

背面の脊椎 (合計) : 1; 背鰭 (合計) : 7. Diagnosis: Color pattern consists of strongly contrasting brown and yellow/cream vertical bands on the body. Snout slightly bulbous. Adipose-fin base short 14.7-19.9% HL. Pectoral-fin spine 15.4-18.3%SL. Maxillary barbel not reaching beyond opercle. Caudal fin with one brown band (Ref. 56216).
