Etymology: Marcusenius: Becasue of J. Marcusen, author of "Zur Phauna des Schwarzen Meeres", 1867; ichthyologist.
Eponymy: Dr Johann Andreas Marcusen (1817–1894) was a Latvian of German descent who was a physician, ichthyologist and zoologist. [...] Lake Leopold (now Lake Mai-Ndombe), Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the holotype locality. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Sangha River in Republic of Congo (Ref. 53209) and Cameroon (Ref. 46901), and middle Congo River (Ref. 4910), lakes Mai Ndombe (Ref. 1877) and Tumba (Ref. 41580) and the Itimbiri River (Ref. 106290) in Democratic Republic of the Congo. Report from the marine lower Congo at Zambi in DRC (Ref. 41594) needs confirmation.
