Vertical striae on scales not meeting at the center, numerous small perforations on hind part of scale. No dark spot at dorsal fin origin; tips of caudal fin black. Most closely resembles S. melanura which has fewer scutes.
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal; Cross section: compressed.
Forms schools in coastal waters.
