Etymology: Oxyeleotris: Greek, oxys = sharp + The name of a Nile fish, eleotris (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: Captan J H Hondius van Herwerden served in the Dutch Government Navy. He was honoured for his knowledge of the coast and rivers of New Guinea, where the type was collected. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
