Etymology: Etheostoma: Greek, etheo = to strain + Greek, stoma = mouth; Rafinesque said "various mouths", but Jordan and Evermann suggest the name might have been intended as "Heterostoma (Ref. 45335); zonale: zonale meaning banded (Ref. 10294).

North America: in Lake Michigan and Mississippi River basins from southwestern New York to Minnesota and south to northern Georgia, northern Alabama and southern Arkansas; in Wabash River drainage of Ohio, Indiana and Illinois; and in streams of southern Illinois, southern Iowa and northern Missouri, USA.
