Etymology: claudinae: Name is dedicated to the late Claudine Mauel, resident of Gisenyi, Rwanda, where she died of a road accident in December 1985 (Ref. 27626).
Eponymy: Claudine Mauel (d: 1985) was a resident of Gisenyi, Rwanda (near to where the holotype was acquired). She died in a road accident. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

背棘 (總數) : 4; 背的軟條 (總數) : 8 - 9; 臀棘: 2 - 3; 臀鰭軟條: 5 - 6. Body cylindrical and elongated, last dorsal ray simple and strongly ossified, not denticulated, spiny and well-developed; snout pointed with well-developed lips often provided with a median lobe. The anterior barbel is longer than the posterior barbel, reaching the anterior side of the eye. The posterior barbel reaches at least until the middle of the eye but never reaches the posterior side of the eye in the specimens examined (Ref. 27626).
Body shape (shape guide): fusiform / normal.
