Etymology: Tampichthys: Tampichthys is derived from the Latinized translation of "fish from the Tampico Embayment drainage of Mexico".

South of the Río Pánuco in five coastal rivers Tuxpan, Cazones, Tecolutla, Nautla and Misantla rivers) of the eastern stretch of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt (TMB) at 20°N (Ref. 80389).
