Etymology: Ancistomus: Greek, agkale, agkalos = hook, something curved + Greek, stoma = mouth; spilomma: Named for the small dark spots on the upper portion of the eye; noun in apposition.
Taxonomic Remarks
In Ambruster et al., 2015 (Ref. 99824), no characteristics were found to separate Ancistomus spiloma from A. micrommatos and A. spinosissimus, and these may represent the same species.

Lips well-developed, occupying most of ventral surface; lower lip mostly covered with papillae, except for a smooth band near border of lips. Caudal fin I, 14, I; slightly concave, upper lobe shorter than lower lobe (Ref. 49598).
