Etymology: tukano: Named after the Tukano, an Amerindian group from the upper rio Negro and Japurá/Caquetá basin in Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela.
Eponymy: This genus and species are named after the Tucano Indians of the upper Rio Negro and Rio Uaupés area of Amazonas, Brazil. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Distinguished from all its congeners, except Corydoras reynoldsi and C. weitzmani, by its color pattern consisting of three large, dark blotches, the first one "mask" on the head, across the eye, the second one on the trunk at the level of the dorsal fin, and the third one on the trunk at the level of the adipose fin. Differs further from C. reynoldsi mainly by the development of trunk blotches; and from C. weitzmani by the presence of a dusky saddle between the dorsal and adipose fin, the second trunk blotch extending vertically from the adipose-fin base to the anal-fin base, and the presence of four dark, vertical stripes in the caudal fin (Ref. 51470).
