Etymology: Amatolebias: Named for Luis H. Amato (for his important contribution to the knowledge of the Rivulidae diversity of Uruguay, Paraguay and Brazil in Rio Grande do Sul); his last name and from the Greek 'lebias' (meaning small fish, commonly used to compose generic names of cyprinodontiform fishes); varzeae: Named after the river basin where it is collected, the rio da Várzea.

The type specimens were collected in a temporary lagoon with shallow water (maximum depth about 1.5 m) and vegetation composed mainly of grasses, Nymphaea sp., Lutwigia sp., and a large volume of filamentous algae (Ref. 54764).
