Etymology: Phallotorynus: Greek, phallos = penis + Greek, otos = ear + Greek, rhinos = nose (Ref. 45335); psittakos: From the Greek noun psittakós, a parrot, alluding to the distribution of the species, restricted to the Rio Paraguay. Paraguay comes from the Guarany paraguá-í, meaning Parrot River; noun in apposition.

পৃষ্ঠীয় নরম পাখনা দন্ড (মোট ) : 7 - 8; পায়ূর নরম পাখনা্তুন্ড: 9 - 10; কশেরুকা : 31 - 32. Distinguished by the following autapomorphy: very large lateral process on base of fifth median anal-fin radial of adult males. Differs from Phallotorynus jucundus by having 7 or 8 dorsal-fin rays (vs. 9 or 10) and from P. fasciolatus by its color pattern with one spot (vs. spotless); from P. pankalos by its color pattern comprising of one spot (vs. six to nine spots). Differs from P. jucundus and P. victoriae by having 13 epipleural ribs (vs. 11 or 12); and differs further from P. victoriae by having 9 gonopodial rays vs. 8 (Ref. 56059).
