Etymology: Parosphromenus: Greek, para in the side of + Greek, osphromenos, osphrainomai = to smell (Ref. 45335); tweediei: Named for the late Michael W.F. Tweedie, whose series of ichthyological publications in the 1950s has been most helpful in furthering studies of Malayan freshwater fishes.
Eponymy: Michael Wilmer Forbes Tweedie (1907–1993) was a herpetologist, ichthyologist, archaeologist and all-round naturalist who worked (1932–1971) at the Raffles Museum (now called the Singapore National Museum). [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Differs from its congeners by the unique coloration of the unpaired fins of the male, especially by the broad red band between two broad black bands and the absence of blue markings (Ref. 56232).
