Etymology: Betta: Malay/Javanese origin. Bleeker (1850, 1858) indicates Ikan Wadder Bettah as the local name of Betta trifasciata Bleeker, 1849 (now Betta picta, Valenciennes, 1846) in the Ambarawa Javanese dialect. Facultative air-breathing (Ref. 126274); Inhabits mainly slow flowing small streams in swampy areas of the heath forest, although it can also be found in faster flowing larger tributaries (Ref. 57022). Occurs in these habitats with very acidic waters due to the presence of subterranean and surface coal (Ref. 57022).
