Etymology: Pungitius: Name meaning one that pricks.
Eponymy: Fyodor Fyodorovich Busse (1838–1897) was a Russian geographer and archaeologist who was Chairman of the Society for the Study of the Amur Region. He excavated in the Amur River basin where this species was found and published (1888) on his work. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.
