Etymology: Aphyosemion: Greek, aphye, -es, sardine, anchovy + Greek, semeion = mark, signal (Ref. 45335); melinoeides: The scientific name is derived from the Greek word melinoeides, meaning orange-colored, in reference to the conspicuous orange color on the throat, belly and fins.
