Etymology: Pterygotrigla: Greek, pterigion, diminutive of pteryx = wing, fin + Greek, trigla, es = red mullet (Ref. 45335); urashimai: Named for Urashima, a hero of the Japanese folktale in which the goddess of fishes, Otohime is also an important character.
Eponymy: Urashima Taro is a hero in a Japanese folktale; a kindly young fisherman who rescues a turtle, which then carries him to the Dragon Palace under the sea. (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

This species possess the following distinguishing characters: no defined cleithral spine (width 5% SL), rudiment of the spine medial to the opercular spine; absence of a black blotch on the first dorsal fin; scalloped-edged scales on trunk; naked prepectoral, breast and interpelvic area; scaled belly; inner surface of pectoral fin with a black blotch, dusk membranes rather than black, 13 connected rays; pectoral length 42-46% SL, longest free ray 38-39% SL; 1-2 epibranchial gill rakers, 8 ceratobranchial gill rakers, short (3% SL); 27 vertebrae (Ref. 54796).
