Etymology: Glyptothorax: Greek, glyptes = carver + Greek, thorax = breast (Ref. 45335); obliquimaculatus: Name derived from the Latin obliqui (meaning oblique) and maculates (meaning having blotches), in reference to the oblique blotches scattered along lateral surface. A noun in apposition.

Asia: known only from its type locality, the Xiaohei River, a tributary of the Nanting River, Salween drainage in Yunnan, China.
