Etymology: Oreoglanis: Greek, oreos = mountain+Greek, glanis = Latin, aurum = gold + Greek, glanis = a fish that can eat the bait without touching the hook; a cat fish (Ref. 45335); suraswadii: Named for Plodprasop Suraswadi, the former Director General of the Department of Fisheries, Thailand, who initiated the fisheries development and conservation program at the Doi Tung Royal Project Area, Chiang Rai, where the type locality is located.
Eponymy: Plodprasop Suraswadi (d: 1945) is a Thai politician who has a bachelor’s degree in fisheries from Kasetsart University, Bangkok (1968), and a master’s degree in fisheries from Oregon State University (1970). [...] (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Spine dorsali (totale) : 0; Raggi dorsali molli (totale) : 6 - 7; Raggi anali molli: 4 - 6; Vertebre: 36 - 38. Belongs to the Oreoglanis siamensis species group as it possesses a distinct median notch on the posterior margin of the lower lip. Can be distinguished from other members of the genus in having a combination of the following characters: short nasal barbel reaching to midway between its base and anterior orbital margin, maxillary barbel with rounded tip, length of adipose-fin base 30.7-38.1 % SL, caudal peduncle length 19.2-24.9 % SL, eye diameter 8.9-15.3 % HL, and a lunate caudal fin having upper and lower first principal rays of approximately equal length (Ref. 83406).
