Etymology: Eviota: No etymology given, suggested by Christopher Scharpt: from Latin 'eu' for 'true' and 'iota' for anything very small, in combination 'truly very small' referring to it as being the smallest vertebrate at the time it has benn described by Jenkins (thus, making the suggestion by Scharpt plausible; aquila: Name from Latin 'aquilus' meaning dark colored or blackish, referring to the general dark coloration of this species, particularly the head, nape, and cheek.

Dorsale stekels (totaal) : 7; Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 8 - 9; Anale stekels: 1; Anale zachte stralen: 8. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: complete cephalic sensory-canal pore system (Group I) and dorsal/anal fin-ray formula 9/8. (of the 30 described species of Eviota in Group I, 16 species have this dorsal/anal fin-ray formula); have a distinct dark pigment on the pectoral-fin base (the pectoral-fin base is heavily peppered with small black dots and the pigmentation on the pectoral-fin base is confluent with pigment over the breast); fifth pelvic-fin ray is absent or rudimentary; pectoral-fin rays 16-18, usually 16 (Ref. 96083).
