Etymology: Haplochromis: Greek, Haploos = single + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335).
Eponymy: A toponym, referring to the type locality: Ripon Falls at the northern end of Lake Victoria. The falls are named after George Robinson, 1st Marquess of Ripon (1827–1909). (Ref. 128868), visit book page.

Found in exposed and sheltered littoral areas with a sand or rock substrate (Ref. 4983). Is mainly insectivorous. Trichoptera and Ephemeroptera larvae were in the stomachs of the fish which were examined. Bivalves and gastropods were also found in the samples (Ref. 558).
