Etymology: Tanichthys: Named for Mr Tan Kam Fei, the famous Scout of Kwangtung; for his interest in ichthyology and encouraging the young scouts toward the study of nature.
Eponymy: Tan Kam Fei was a Chinese boy-scout leader who discovered and collected the first specimens of the minnows (1932) and brought them to the attention of the author. This species is distinguished from its congeners by having more branched rays in anal fin 9 1/2 (vs. 7-8 1/2 in T. micagemmae and 8 1/2 in T. albonubes, T. thacbaensis); differs from T. micagemmae. by having a white anal-fin margin (vs. red) (Ref. 125920).
