Etymology: villasboas: Name a patronym that honors the Orlando, Claudio and Leonardo Villas Boas brothers, three frontiersmen that led the Expedição Roncador-Xingu (Ref. 117418).
Eponymy: Charles Frederick Hartt (1840–1878) was a Canadian geologist, palaeontologist and naturalist, who was a member of the Thayer Expedition (1865–1866) to Brazil, a country in which he was a specialist. This species can be distinguished from other congeners by the following characters: presence of completely covered abdomen by minutes plates; caudal peduncle slightly compressed laterally after confluence of lateral keels; greater head length; and snout with prominent medial longitudinal ridge (Ref. 117418).
