Etymology: Muraenichthys: Latin,muraena = morey eel + Greek, ichtys = fish (Ref. 45335); hibinoi: Name 'hibinoi' in honor of Yusuke Hibino, Kitakyushu Museum of Natural History and Human History, Japan, for his distinguished contribution to Anguilliformes taxonomy, particularly ophichthid eels.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: the dorsal fin originates above the 41st or 42nd lateral line pore, anterior to a vertical through the mid anus; distance from anus to the origin of dorsal fin 57.37%-61.8% in HL; predorsal vertebrae 40-41, preanal vertebrae 50, and total vertebrae count 140-141; fifty lateral line pores before the vent; and all maxillary, mandibular, and vomerine teeth multiserial and blunt (Ref. 137824).
