Etymology: Pantanodon: Greek, pante = in all places, wholly + Greek, odous = teeth (Ref. 45335); nyingi: Name 'nyingi' from a Swahili word meaning 'multiple', in reference to the multiple modified fins of the new species. A noun in apposition.

Dorsale zachte stralen (totaal) : 6; Anale zachte stralen: 20. This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: small deep bodied fish; a clear black fringe at the distal end of the anal fin and a second brownish-black band at the anterior art of the anal fin, with posterior half frayed with small filaments including hooks; wide vertical band at the end of the caudal peduncle in males, which has a short horizontal band ending upon the caudal fin at the dorsal side; and dorsal outline steep diagonally till the end of the head, and flattened till dorsal fin (Ref. 137898).
