This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: mandibular teeth 38-42, mean 40 ± 2 in a functional row arranged in a straight line; presence of elongate fingerlike fimbriae on the ventral and posterior faces of the paired premaxillae; fimbriae largely restricted to the posterior face of the pre maxillae; primary premaxillary teeth 140-199; eye diameter 2.6%-4.8% SL; branchiostegal rays modally 6; total anal fin rays fewer than 11; shape of the lateral ethmoid exhibits a free posterior margin as part of a semicircular bony margin of the orbit; and darker overall pigmentation with patches of darker and lighter coloration (Ref. 138252).
