Etymology: Nothobranchius: Greek, nothos = false + Greek, brangchia = gill (Ref. 45335)marmoreus: Name 'marmoreus' from the Latin adjective deriving from the ancient Greek word 'marmaros', meaning 'resembling marble' or 'marblelike', in reference to the irregularly mottled marbled colour pattern on the body of the males of the new species.

This species is distinguished from its congeners by the following set of characters: body with irregular red-brown patches and stripes, forming a marble-like mottled pattern in male; anal and caudal fins with slender yellow to amber subdistal band and broad dark brown distal band; head depth 80-84% HL; caudal peduncle length 152-159 in % of its depth; head length 25.5-30.9% SL; caudal peduncle length 152-159 in % of its depth; prepelvic length 45.5-46.7% SL; and head width 65.5-72.9 in % of its depth (Ref. 138275).
