This species is distinguished from all its congeners, except M. agnesae, by the presence of two irregularly-shaped humeral blotches, with dark longitudinal stripes on the dorsal portion of the body; differs from M. agnesae by the straight longitudinal stripes, conspicuous dorsally, the humeral blotches contacting each other, its 2-3 tricuspid maxillary teeth, the 32-35 lateral-line scales, and the length of maxilla 45.3–51.0% in head length (Ref. 138309).
